Simon linked to this site about the Pentagon plane, and I find that it does rather raise the question of wht happened to the plane!!
My daughter's piano teacher's website - we're going to see her playing tonight in a programme of cello/piano pieces.
I made bread pudding using panetonne on Sunday - wonderful. Especially after Pen suggested that I add chocolate chips to it.
From now on the pages are produced dynamically from a database so expect all kinds of horrible things to go wrong.
Hmm, I am working on a new delivery mechanism for the log so it may be uppy downy for a bit.
Who Was that Masked God?: The Symbolism of Dionysos in NietzscheÂ’s Philosophy. Great title, who knows about the content.
Definitions of Excruciatingly Arcane Words Found in Gene Wolfe's THE SHADOW OF THE TORTURER
"Hello, I'm Relton DuPiniot, and I am a blogeur. On the left are some of the greatest weblogs in the world on any given day. I know, because I like to watch them and monitor their every move with the help of thewebtoday's software extensions." Well, this page gets a mention a few times so let's repay the compliment...
Tribune company photo archiving task force key words (enhancement terms) and photo type words for digital photo archives
How to speak hip. Why does the LP cover appear to feature people spitting in each other's mouths?
William tells me about a new google search feature "allinurl:" which lets you find search on the contents of the url. Potentially useful methinks.
Also on Channel 4 on Friday nights is Thumb Bandits, a programme about computer games, and one of the best examples of "student just come in from the pub" television I have seen for years. (Almost since I stopped being a student who came in from the pub in fact) It's great and they do some interesting stuff about game history too.
Black Books has returned to channel 4 on Friday nights and it is still the funniest thing I have seen in years. I like it so much I might even buy the DVD/video of series one.
There was an article about mash-ups in the Guardian recently so I went looking for some and found boom selection which links to quite a few. I think that this craig david/eye of the tiger mash-up by picasio is fantastic. Check out some of the others - some are really surprising.
Get a mental image of what you think a band called "Thee Apologies" would look like, and then go and see.
My brain is hurting today. I am trying to work out database joins and my brain refuses to function. *sigh*
The Case of "doubutsu no haka no shashin": The Use of Snapshots in Japanese Pet Cemeteries.
Prune Belly Syndrome Network - I have never heard of this (nor by its "proper" name Eagle-Barrett Syndrome), so I must assume that it is rare.
The Genius of Lloyd Loar at the Museum of Musical Instruments which has loads of good stuff. No free Lloyd Loar F5s though.
Lots of people have been linking to the Mandobabes page, so I will too - I am particularly fond of this picture - the Gibson mandolins are just gorgeuous. I've always wanted to own a Lloyd Loar F5. *sigh*
I'm going to be boring and moan about User Friendly again - once again it is getting entirely unfunny. Half the time I don't even understand what is meant to be funny about them.
Congratulations to Frank and Paola who got married secretly on 02/02/02 (Yes, I know you don't know who they are....)
I forgot to mention that someone made a "loggy" for me, for which many thanks (though my hair is darker and beard whiter.....)
The miniature earth - I have seen a critique of this kind of breakdown, but I can't remember what or where.
The alphabet synthesis machine - apart from being IE specific in some ways (ugh), this is downright gorgeous!!
Urinal.net "The best place to piss away your time on the Internet" Some interesting shots - try this one, for instance.
This was described to me as a "Japanese tube site", so I assumed railways, but I suspect it is in fact a "Japanese valve site" - it won't load enough at the moment for me to check! Yes, definitely a valve site.
Just to reveal the true geek within me, on Saturday I got hold of the front panel of the PDP 11/45 that we used to run in the department 20 years ago and I cannot tell you how pleased that made me. I thought that the system had been traded in to DEC for a VAX, but it seems to have been hidden away in a cupboard somewhere and in the general move that is happening just now it just appeared outside my office! It even has the key still in the panel.
Apolgies for the lack of updates recently - I have been (and still am) involved in a major programming exercise which has been eating time. I keep thinking I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but I suspect that it is just the tail lamp of the train in front.
Tom Tomorrow (now with added weblog) mentions a 'Deke party' and as I didn't know what it was I went looking and found this and this. Oh and it's the "oldest existing secret men's fraternity of New England origin".
Brighton Ourstory project - I looked at this and wondered what an ourstory was : something like a clerestory perhaps, though it does seem to be a queerstory instead.
apropos of nothing, I just discovered that you pronounce Angela Brazil's name to rhyme with frazzle.
Misterpants talsk today about being "hunched over our cruel monitors". I love that. (He has some storming links going on to - the Winter X games trailers are fantastic)
vastly busy again today, but not too busy to send you all to the new look Sharpeworld which has come out of hiatus and, as usual, has loads of excellent links. In particular I have to mention the Shooby Taylor link.
The Kano sisters and their "Kano Sisters Gorgeous Dolls". They really do look like them, right down to the plastic.
Right, moved and all the machines back up and running. I just have to remember to come to my new (temporary) office when I come in to work! It will take weeks to get everything sorted out though and then I'll have to move again *sigh*. Just at the moment I don't have enough mouse room. But I am now 100Mb ethernet rather than 10Mb so that is good.
Damn it, the Nutlog has some cracking links in it at the moment - too many to steal really. Go and check it out
I borrowed a Japanese CD from my daughter's piano teacher which is called Habikino no Ashita (or perhaps Habikino no Asa). I assume this means something like "Habikino Dawn" anyway the music is very strange : sort of tinkly music box tunes. Assuming I have the right one, Habikino is near Osaka that has a legend associated with it.
Angel Star - web page of one of these people who is having plastic surgery to be a living sculpture. You need to read some of the stuff as it is quite odd really.
Jackie Chan glasses : "Jackie Chan EyeGear combines the benefits of ultra light and strong titanium frames with superior grip and a comfortable fit. Even when not in use, the unique folding design of the glasses allows them to be carried safely in street-smart style using the fashionable neck strap and special 'dragon's hand' concept autographed case" What????
I was updating my reading list as I haven't done it for a while and I have forgotten half the books I have read recently - though to be fair I have skimmed a lot that turned out to be not very interesting and so they are all mishmashed in my head. (I don't list the ones I skim briefly)
Great Hiroshige pages, in fact it's an entirely fantastic set of pages. I am tempted to try printing some of these out to see how they look on paper.
Our local Costco sells Sterno - i had never seen it before as it is not something that has ever been sold in teh UK. The only reason I know about it is because of the various blues songs that refer to canned heat. I have no idea at all what you would use it for!
Respooling 120 film onto 620 spools for use in older cameras - could be useful to know about.
Impulse 120 - Welcome to the official site of Impulse 120 and the next generation of extreme music. Based in Rocklin CA, a small town outside of Sacramento, Impulse 120 consists of former members of Used2bsane and Severance. Combining originality and talent to form a powerful and different sound Impulse 120 delivers a damaging blow to conformity while creating a sound that will transform the "Mainstream" sound into the " Impulse 120" sound as a standard definition. Oh, and they have an online store - so much for a damaging blow to conformity. I listened to the track they have on-line - muffled vocals and much use of power chords, pretty much like the backing to any skate video. Not much evidence of originality anywhere.
I have to move out of my office next week and I have been in it a long time - rather a lot of stuff to move....
Space shuttle and space station - fantastic image (and check out the video on this page too)
When people learn that complexity is not a good thing, even when marketed as "customer convenience"
Astonishing - a dedicated pr0n hosting service. Though whether one really wants amateur hosting I don't know, though I assume that doe snot refer to the people doing the hosting.
What I was wondering the other day, is where is all the computer generated pr0n? I don't mean cartoons, I mean life-like films. I can't believe it doesn't exist.
And another phobia list - what is it with phobia lists? Half the names are entirely made up - take a smattering of classical education and stick "phobia" on the end of appropriate stems. Why isn't there a "philia" list? };
I have mentioned Mutopia before, but it should be mentioned again - PD sheet music of out of copyright works.
US Marine's new pixellated camouflage (via Lake Effect) which reminds me that I was going to mention Roy Behren's spiffy sounding new book about artists and camouflage, except that I can't find it anywhere on the net! It's called False Colors and it looks like a good read. Maybe it's not out yet.
QuickCam and Unconventional Imaging Astronomy Group - some fantastic images from cheap kit.
