Strange - I don't why this site refers to these glass paperweights as "marbles" : not a usage I have ever come across. Possibly a crosspondular usage.
crosspondular - currently not getting any hits on google.

They're not, the boy in the paperweight called "Marble Player" is playing marbles.
And the other galleries ARE marbles.
And "Cross-Pond-ular" is refering to "across the pond". The "Pond" being the Atlantic Ocean. ie: Bitish-American differences in language.
I just made crosspondular up. All by myself. And as to all the other things being marbles, well, marbles are small some of those are 2or 3 inches across : that makes them paperweights in my book, flat bottom or not.

Funny. I have never run across a Marble made out of marble.

I will offer my 'crosspondular' input...the kid is playing marbles. They are called paperweights here too. They can also be weapons....cause us Americans have defense issues...

The larger sized marbles were/are more often kept<br> for display purposes. When, during tournaments, larger marbles are used, they can only be used as a "shooter."<br> <br> The following link has information on a whole <br> range of sizes:<br> <a href="http://www.landofmarbles.com/marbles-measuring.html<span">http://www.landofmarbles.com/marbles-measuring.html<span</a> style="font-style: italic;"></span>
