the cars look older than you'd expect for 53. Except from family history I'm told there was a long post-war retention of older cars because of the austerity programme, and that it was around the mid 50s people got to ditch their pre-war cars and move up to the new models. <br><br>the classic london bus in the photo is my all-time fave. When I lived in London (nearly 20 years ago now) these still worked a minority of routes. Its really sad they've finally hit the end-of-life. Just like the W and Z class wooden trams in Melbourne, now only restaurant and tourist cars, not in regular service. They were amazingly functional, if risky and labour intensive.
