I noticed this behaviour in my old job. I didn't know that Microsoft had acknowledged it as a problem though. I always thought it was a featurette that gave you some idea of how many people were in a group.

Somethign that would in fact be very useful. (As would different folder icons - bulging folders for ones with lots of files (or disc space used) in them
