Townsend's bunting - what it doesn't say is that the only known sighting is the specimen that Audubon painted (which is in the Smithsonian). He also painted three other birds that have never been seen at all since. Strange.



Audubon

Mr. Audubon, despite being a meticulously detailed painter, did a painting of a golden eagle which is in fact a juvenile bald eagle. Most noticeable, as bald eagles have no feathers on their lower legs, while golden eagles have feathers all the way down to their toes. It should be remembered that although he is remembered as a leading ornithological authority he was a painter primarily, not a formally educated scientist.
