Your granddad told me to come home. He told me there was a problem with the heart-beat and your mummy was asking for me at the hospital. I travelled the 100 mile trip home at breakneck speeds. They ushered me in to a room where your mummy, grandma and granddad were sat, crying. I didn't know you had already gone. The doctor came in and said "I'm sorry, your baby is dead, and there was nothing we could do." I was confused. You were still inside your mummy. They told me that you could still be born naturally or they could cut your mummy and take you out. We still wanted you so badly - we had to know, we had to see you born. You gave your mummy little trouble and I am so proud of you both. We held you, then they weighed, cleaned and dressed you and we kept you all night. Everybody was so good to us, even though it was so very hard. They told us your birthday would be 21st February. You were stillborn 20th February, full-term and perfectly formed - they could find nothing wrong with you in all the tests, "I'm sorry, but it's just one of those things that sometimes happens. We don't have an explanation for everything." They said. Thank you letting me share your birth. It was the most amazing, wonderful day of my life. But, also the most tragic. You will never know me but I will never forget you. All my love, Miguel - your daddy. Miguel Cooksey (miguel.cooksey@virgin.net)20th February 2003 |
