I still have no idea why the page is so slow to load at the moment.
Turning off css on the browser seems to make a significant difference. I read that css files under 1 packet size speeds up loading...seems logical.

But you should have the CSS file in your cache so it should be 0 cost to load after the first visit. I may have some weird error in the CSS though that has only just manifested itself.
