I haven't had a rant for, oh, nearly several posts now, so, wrt the previous item, why do people insist on talking about "logging on to the Internet". I don't ever recall having to log on to the Internet ever. (I don't recall ever logging on to the BBC website either, though that's what they always say) What's wrong with "go"?
Surely back in your 56k days you had to use a username and password to dial up to the internet.

That's basically logging on isn't it.

Ha!
Mr Dan
No, that was logging on to my ISP not the Internet.

There are of course web pages that you have to log in to, such as your online bank or whatver. In my book "logging in" implies some for of authentication, although its original non-computer meaning may not include such (signing in at the guard station comes to mind). Yes, "log on to our website" is really annoying. ---Ole
